Insulation, security, comfort: the roller shutter has become the standard fitting on French windows. Here is the essential knowledge to choose well.
The installation types
- Traditional (built-in): box hidden in the masonry, ideal for new builds
- Renovation: visible box fixed to the existing window, without major work
- Window-block: window and shutter delivered as one unit, common in full replacements
PVC or aluminium?
PVC is economical and insulates well, but is limited to modest widths. Aluminium, barely more expensive, lasts better, allows large sizes and offers foam-filled slats: it is our recommendation for most uses, and essential where security matters.
Manual or motorised?
Strap and crank remain reliable and cheap. Motorisation (wired or radio) brings comfort, time programming and presence simulation; it is strongly advised for large openings with heavy curtains.
Fitted price ranges
- Manual PVC shutter in renovation: roughly €200 to €400 per window
- Motorised aluminium shutter: roughly €400 to €800 depending on size
- Motorising an existing manual shutter: roughly €250 to €450
