A motorised sliding gate combines mechanics, electricity and electronics: when it breaks down, the cause is often simpler than feared. Run these checks before calling.
The gate no longer reacts at all
- Check the dedicated breaker and the control-box switch
- Test a second remote or the key switch: this isolates a transmitter fault
- Make sure the manual release was not left engaged after a power cut
The gate stops or reverses
- Photocells: clean the lenses and check alignment — a spider's web is enough to block closing
- Dirty rail: stones, leaves or frost increase effort and trigger obstacle detection
- Worn wheels: a gate that judders pushes the motor beyond its safety threshold
The gate is noisy or jerky
Squeaks and jolts signal tired rollers, a worn pinion or a misadjusted rack (pinion-rack play should be one to two millimetres). Annual greasing of rail and rack prevents most of these troubles.
