Whether it serves as back-up during a power cut or as the main supply on a solar kit, the battery of a Somfy motorisation is a wear part. Anticipating its replacement avoids a gate stuck at the worst moment.
What lifespan for which use?
- Back-up battery (9.6 or 24 V): 3 to 5 years on average; it ages even unused, as it sits on permanent trickle charge
- Solar pack: 4 to 6 years for the battery, depending on the panel's sun exposure and daily cycles
- Back-up autonomy: expect around ten cycles during a power cut, fewer in very cold weather
Signs of a battery at the end of its life
- The gate visibly slows near the end of travel or in cold weather
- Autonomy collapses: barely two or three cycles after a cut
- The control unit's LED signals a charging fault
- The battery swells or heats up: replace it immediately
Extending its life
- Clean the solar panel twice a year and check it faces due south
- Avoid deep discharges: after a long power cut, let the battery recharge fully
- In freezing weather, limit unnecessary cycles: cold temporarily reduces capacity
- Always replace with an identical or manufacturer-approved reference
