How to Grease a Metal Shutter: The Method and the Right Products

A metal shutter that squeaks, strains or judders usually needs just one thing: proper lubrication. Fifteen minutes twice a year is enough — provided you use the right products in the right places.

What to lubricate

  • The side rails: after dusting (vacuum then cloth), apply a dry silicone or PTFE lubricant. Never thick grease: it traps dust and forms an abrasive paste.
  • The shutter lock: a puff of dry lubricant into the cylinder, a few key turns, wipe clean.
  • The axle ends and bearings: lithium grease on the accessible rotation points, sparingly.
  • Bolts and blocking bars: light penetrating oil on latches and pivots.

What never to touch

  • The motor and its brake: factory-lubricated for life — any addition degrades braking
  • The curtain itself: a damp cloth is enough; slats need no grease
  • The springs in the box: reaching them requires removal, strictly a professional job

The complete maintenance routine

  1. Clean the rails and curtain
  2. Dry-lubricate the rails and lock
  3. Visually check fasteners, stops and fixings
  4. Listen to a full cycle: any new noise is a signal
